Once More From The Top

Guess who’s back at it again with the back at it again? It’s me Afton!! So much has happened since I left you last. First off I’m back working during the day and I’m actually doing stuff that is part of my job. I am actually supervising instead of being a glorified correctional officer. With all that going on it leads me to the second thing. I big chopped for the 2nd time and I am loving it. I transitioned for around 46 weeks. I wanted to make it to one year but I figured the extra weeks wouldn’t make a difference so I went for it. This time I went to a natural hair salon to make sure that all my relaxed ends would be gone. They did a fantastic job. What I am noticing about my curl pattern now is that the front is a bit straighter than the rest of my hair. I think it may have to do with the times that I blew my hair out. Otherwise I think it is safe to say that I am a 4c all over. I have tight coils with no definite curl pattern. As far as styling goes I’ve been just wearing my twa out and just moisturizing and sealing in the morning. It has done wonders for my morning routine since I don’t have to wrestle with two textures and beat it into submission in order to stay in a bun for work. However, you know how I roll lol! So I have to start experimenting with styles to see what fits.

Another thing that I have started dabbling back into is wearing makeup. I’ve gotten so used to not wearing makeup because of work that I’m sitting on perfectly good makeup and nothing to do with it. So I decided to start at least wearing a bit on my days off to get back into the swing of things. I still don’t believe that I will ever wear a full face to work but maybe I can work on something muted just so I don’t look like death warmed over in the morning.

As for blogging in general, I’m still trying to figure out what to really focus on with this blog. One idea that keeps popping into my mind is doing something that shows how I balance building a business through social media while still working a full time job, being a full time mommy, and possible PTA president. So stay tuned for what happens next.

Until next time

I'm Jumping Back In The Natural Pool (Or Winston's Return)

Me Enjoying the Natural Life
Hey everybody! As I was scrolling through Instagram a few days ago, I came across a picture of the most gorgeous natural hair that I have ever seen. Of course I had to double tap that and then a familiar feeling came over me. I started missing my natural hair. If you have been rocking with me for a while then you know that back in 2013 I cut all of my hair off and rocked my natural hair for six months. What made me go back to relaxed? My sweet Lovey scrolling through old pictures of us and coming across one of the two of us and me in my collarbone length relaxed glory. He smiled that goofy smile he smiles and said “I kinda miss your hair like that”. I said “but I can still have hair like that natural”. And he said “I know but I just like your hair the way it used to be.” Now don’t get Lovey wrong, he would love me with hair to my butt and hair so short I have to comb it with a spoon but something about my relaxed locks just had a hold on him. Well around the same time I was getting frustrated with my natural hair because it was in that awkward stage of wanting to be a TWA but not wanting to be and I was getting sick of twist outs. Add to that the fact that I was fighting heat damage after an ill-fated trip to the salon for a blowout and I decided to just go back to relaxed because it was “easier”.

The Picture That Lovey Loved
After my trip down memory lane on Instagram, I slid over to and saw a fellow lista mapping out her journey from relaxed to natural hair and I was pleasantly surprised that her regimen was so easy. I was inspired once again. However I know that her journey will not be mine and I shouldn’t expect it to be. So yes ladies and gentlemen I am reviving “Winston”. I have missed what was really the ease of hoping in the shower, washing and conditioning my hair, styling it and going on about my day. None of the having to plan out a wash day in my already cramped schedule just to forget the whole thing when I decided that styling will take too long and I have to go to work.

Now this transition will be long term but not years and years long. Right now I am projecting at least a year and in that time I expect great things to happen as far as my hair is concerned. What I am most excited for it the chance to perfect my styling to blend my two textures of hair. And don’t worry my beautiful readers; you will be along for the ride.

Until next time...

Have you ever gone from relaxed to natural back to relaxed and now back to natural? (Wow that's a tongue twister!) If so let me know in the comments below.

What's My Motivation (or I'm Putting Myself Out There)

For those who know me and follow this blog, you know I can be a bit of a deadbeat at times. I don’t mean to be but when it comes to my blog or social media in general, there are times when I am radio silent. It doesn’t mean that I don’t care because believe me I do. It’s just that life gets in the way and by life I mean money. I’m still trying to find a way to budget and still indulge in my vice (online shopping) but sometimes even with a two income household, the bills get bigger than anticipated and I end up having to part temporarily with the one thing that I love and that’s my laptop. I’m not going to lie to you guys, the laptop almost always ends up going to the pawn shop for a bit but then I get it back and I always say I won’t hock it again only to two weeks later tell Lovey “you know what to do” and he solemnly takes my laptop back to the “shop”. I then tell myself that I will still blog even if it means going to my grandmother’s house or my mother’s house and using their desktops to do it. But with work and the kids I just want to lay down and take a nap and I never make it over there to blog. So what is a girl to do when she’s in a financial cul-de-sac and there’s no escaping it? Well the time has come for me to be a big girl (a 34 year old big girl) and make my way to keep what’s mine and do what I love and if I’m lucky find a way to monetize on it. Don’t get me wrong, money is not my sole motivation for why I blog. I see it as an outlet, especially in a profession where individuality and innovation is not encouraged. I always ask myself what’s so special about me and what makes me stand out more than the rest? Well I have so many stories to tell and a job that is anything but boring.

When I started “Same Hair Different Head” I meant for it to be a hair blog, but I am not my hair (cue India. Arie). I love my hair and I love anything hair related, but I want my blog to do more. I want to explore myself as a person who loves makeup but can’t stand putting it on. I want to talk more about being a mother and a wife and a correctional sergeant and a person who lives with depression and a piercing addict and a girl who loves a good vape every now and then. I want to put those things out there, but a small voice keeps telling me “no one cares about that” or “you won’t attract readers with things like vaping and piercing”. Now I want to tell that voice to have several seats and let me just dive in and see what people want to read about. I have had a small following with this blog and I’m so grateful but I want to expand and grow my blog to something that people look forward to reading.

I know you’re thinking “Afton what’s the point of this post?” Well the point is that I’m ready to put what really goes on in my life out there and while it may seem boring to me, it may not be to someone else. I have opinions and thoughts and I want them out there in a wider scale. So if you’re with me and ready to dive in to what makes “Same Hair Different Head” tick, then spread the word to everyone who may get a kick out it and maybe get something out of it.

Do you have a blog that you want the world to see and appreciate? Let me know in the comments below.

Piercing One Month Update

Hey everybody. A few posts ago I talked about how I got my "girls" pierced and the fun of showing off my tatas to the man who pierced them in front of the man I married (I still giggle about that one). Well this post is kind of an update of what has been going on with them since then.

One thing I can say is that sea salt soaks are my new best friend. Sea salt soaks are the go to when it comes to piercing cleaning and maintenance. What I have been doing is taking a cup (8 oz) of bottled water and adding a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt. You want to make sure that it is pure sea salt with no additives and also don't use table salt because table salt contains iodine which I have read is a no no for piercings. Once I mix it up I put it into two shot glasses and put the piercings in and lay on the couch or bed and let them soak for 15 minutes. Afterwards I rinse them off with more bottled water and use a q-tip to clean any gunk off of them. I do this at least twice a day and so far my healing has been great.

Another thing I researched about the healing process is that the gunk that comes out is not indicative of an infection. In fact it is lymphatic fluid which is normal. If it turns colors, smells bad, or there is extreme pain and redness at the piercing site and you're running a fever then there may be an infection. That's why it is best to take a "hands off" approach to your piercings during the healing process. So I have been sure to not play with my piercings or rotate them if possible. Sometimes they rotate when I am cleaning them, so I try to use caution during that time.

As far as pain, I have had a bit of it but nothing that I can't handle. It usually happens if my shirt or bra gets caught on them but after a few minutes they are back to somewhat normal.

Well that's it for my little update. I found out that these kind of piercings are not for the impatient crowd because they can take 9-12 months to fully heal and sometimes longer than that. So I just take it one day at a time until next year when they are completely healed.

Until next time

How about you? Do you have any piercings and if so what did you do to keep them clean and infection free? Let me know in the comments below.

Clairisonic Brushes for only $5.09?!?

Hey everyone. This post is going to be short and sweet and not about hair. If you remember from another post I had been talking about getting my skin in order. I am a 34 year old woman with the skin of a 17 year old. Acne has been the bane of my existence since my first pimple over 20 years ago. I have tried it all from Proactiv to Oil Cleansing and nothing seemed to work. Once I even went to get a facial and the woman doing the facial said that my skin was so clogged that she could have extracted more from just my nose but I only paid for an hour. Yikes!!

So a few years ago I decided to invest in a Clairisonic Brush because it claimed to clear not only your skin but your pores of any dirt and makeup that just washing your face with your hands can leave behind. While I love my Clairisonic, what I didn't love is having to pay $25 for replacements for the brush heads. They say that they have to be replaced every three months but to me that's a long time and a lot of dirt (even with the weekly cleaning) so I tend to replace my brush heads every month. But as you can gather, $25 a month adds up to $300 a year. That's more than what the brush cost when I bought it!

So one day while browsing Amazon I stumbled across replacement brush heads that cost $5.09 for three. A two pack of brush head replacements actually retails for $44 at Ulta so I knew I would be saving major money.

The one draw back that I can think of is that these are not "real" Clarisonic brush heads, but they do fit onto my brush and my skin cannot tell the difference. I suggest that you give them a try if you own a Clarisonic brush but don't want to break the bank when buying replacements.

Let me know in the comments if you use any of the Clarisonic line of brushes or do you use another kind of face brush in your facial routine.

Thanks for reading

Piercings Promotions and Beyond

Hello everyone in blogland. I’m back with just a post on the random (but exciting things) that have been going on in my little corner of the world.

First of all, a few days ago I did what I thought I would never do. I got pierced for the fourth time. I already have two holes in each ear and a ring in my belly button. So I decided that I wanted to get my “girl’s” pierced. Of course it is out there and crazy but that’s just who I am. I would describe myself as that put together person who has a bit of a wild child streak in me. The experience was kind of cool but awkward. My hubby went with me for moral support and plus he thought the whole idea was hot. My piercing artist was a guy and of course to get my “bubbies” pierced I had to be topless which meant that another man would see the “Raleigh two” lol! Of course Lovey didn’t mind because to him, it was business not personal. The piercing hurt a little but the one thing I noticed is when I got the first one pierced, I felt this rush. Like all the blood in my body warmed up and coursed through my veins. I think it was also adrenaline because my piercer said that he wanted to take advantage of it to pierce the other one. After he was finished I felt so bad ass and wanted to show them off to the world. Of course I didn’t but later that evening when Lovey picked the kids up from school he told them that mommy got some new “earrings”. When Hushpuppy came in the house, she asked “Where are the earrings?” Me not thinking to show them a pair of random earrings, thought Lovey had told them I got pierced. So I did what any normal mother would do. I flashed my children. Yep my kids saw my pierced boobs and promptly began to laugh. Then my mother came by and Hushpuppy told her “Mommy as boobie earrings!” So of course I had to show my mother. She thought it was cool. Not her cup of tea but if I’m happy with it, she is too. Well now that I’ve shared a bit more about me than I expected let’s move on.

I GOT PROMOTED!! Yep I am officially a Correctional Sergeant which means I not only supervise inmates but officers. So far it’s been okay but I just want a bit more to do. Hopefully it will happen sooner than later but until then I’m just happy that one of my goals has been met.

Since I got promoted and have some new “jewelry” I decided that it was time that I took my getting in shape and losing weight seriously. I’ve lost 15 lbs since I declared last year that I needed to lose weight after getting to my heaviest weight ever at 262 lbs after my ankle surgery. So I have purchased a Weight Watchers subscription, a Polar Heart Rate monitor, a couple of pieces of workout clothes and some headphones for music and joined a local gym so I’m ready to go. My goal is to lose at least 75 lbs but I could stand to lose 100 lbs total. Of course I plan on documenting the whole journey which I think will be fun.

So that’s what’s been going on around here. I’ll still be updating on my hair and different products I’ll be trying out on my hair to finally get to my length goal for the year.

Until then…

Jingle VoxBox Unopening and Initial Review

Hey everybody. Today’s post is all about the Jingle VoxBox that I received from Influenster. I have been a part of Influenster since 2012 and I have to say that the products that I have received from them have been awesome. I was so happy to be chosen for this Vox Box because I know the items that are picked do not disappoint. So without further ado, here we go.

The first thing out the box is an Itty Bitty from Hallmark. I got the Rapunzel one and she is so cute! Of course Hushpuppy and Dumpling had a tug of war over who was going to keep it so I had to broker a deal. Dumpling could have Rapunzel since it was close to her birthday and Hushpuppy got to choose the one she wanted from the Hallmark website and when I got paid, she could get it. The one she chose was the Elsa/Anna key chain and I also saw one that I wanted for myself which was Wonder Woman. The Itty Bitty line is small stuffed toys and key chains that have something for everyone (from Disney fans to DC Comic fans and everyone in between).

Next are the Biscoff Cookies. When I saw these in the box my first thought went to the cookie butter from Trader Joe’s because if you see Speculoos cookies the first thing you think about is cookie butter. Biscoff states that these are Europe’s favorite cookies with coffee and I can’t wait to see if that is true for a NC native such as myself. It’s a good thing I got a new coffee maker for Christmas and some coffee so I can relax with my Biscoffs and a cup of Joe.

I also received KISS True Volume Lashes and their Strip Lash Adhesive with Aloe. I have a few packs of lashes lying around in my makeup box but I have never worn them because to me falsies have always been a bit too much when wearing makeup out. Don’t get me wrong, if the occasion called for glam I would slap those bad boys on in a minute. But since I never wear makeup except for church and the occasional night out I don’t know if and when I will ever wear them. I think I’ll still give them a try because you never know moods change.

I was really excited for the Pure Ice Nail Polish because I always see them in Wal-Mart but I never picked one up. The color I received was Twisted which is a glittery greenish blue which I can’t wait to try out. It will have to be on a day off because the color doesn’t jive with my job’s uniform policy and since I’m trying to get promoted, I don’t need any issues to stand in the way of that.

Next up I got the NYC City Proof 24HR Waterproof Eyeliner from NYC Color. I love when NYC Color is featured in Vox Boxes because they always have something that I will definitely use. The eyeliner I received was Dark Brown so I can’t wait to see how it will work with my Naked 3 palate that I still use from time to time.

I also got a small container of the Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream. I sampled a small bit on my hand and I liked how it softened the dry spots without feeling greasy like some moisturizers can feel. I plan on carrying this in my purse and my bag for work. I also want to try in on Hushpuppy as an all over moisturizer because she has very dry skin which is also sensitive.

Finally I received a coupon for one free bag of Ore-Ida Tater Tots. At first I thought it was kind of random that I received a coupon for tater tots but then when I read that they are looking for us Influensters to be part of the new “Totchos” trend I have to say that I was intrigued. Also I love tater tots and nachos, so combining them together will be fun.

Well that’s it for my Jingle Vox Box unboxing/initial review. I’ll be back in a week or two with a follow-up to the box and be on the lookout for posts that are specifically for some of the items I get to use. If you want to be a part of the Influenster community and have the opportunity to get free products to sample, review, and keep click the link right here.

Are there any items in the box that you have been curious to try? If you are part of Influenster, how has the experience been for you? Let me know in the comments below.

The items included in this box were provided for testing purposes complementary from Influenster.
