Getting Back to Basics With My Hair Routine

Last Known Photo of Length Pre-Big Chop
When it comes to getting my hair back into its pre-big chop glory days, I have decided that a basic and simple approach to my regimen is the way to go. When I first started my hair journey some four years ago, I tried everything I could get my hands on that I had seen on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Hairlista, etc... However once I jumped off the bandwagon and settled into a basic routine of hair care and maintenance, my hair started to flourish and grow to almost APL. That's right I'm claiming that my former length was almost APL. But in the words of my high school band director J.R. Richardson "almost counts in horseshoes and hand grenades"! Therefore if I want to get to APL for real I'm going to have to put in the work. But thankfully, work doesn't mean throwing my entire pantry and spice rack on my head and crossing my fingers. So the following is my routine and the products that I will be using.

1. Shampoo-Yes I shampoo more than I cowash. Don't get me wrong I like cowashing as much as the next girl but for some reason I love a good lather. When I shampoo 99.99% I use Creme of Nature Argan Oil Sulfate-free Shampoo. (phew that's a mouthful) When I do clarify (which isn't often) I use Redken Cleansing Cream which if I'm not mistaken I reviewed (if not I will). It clarifies and chelates without drying out my hair.

2. Deep Condition-I love me some deep conditioning like Dumpling likes bananas lol! My go to for deep conditioning is GVP Humectress Conditioner mixed with either JBCO or Castor Oil. Since going back to relaxed I have been deep conditioning on damp and shampooed hair. The longer into my stretches I get, I start to deep condition on dry hair being sure to concentrate the conditioner on my new growth and I cowash after.

3. Leave Ins-Now with leave ins, I have no idea what I want. If I am going to heat style or roller set, then I use my Aphogee Green Tea and Keratin leave in spray. If I am air drying, then I use either Neutrogena Triple Moisture Leave In or S-Curl No Drip Moisturizer. I want to eventually find a leave in that I can use for both which will make me and my husband happy because he is still on a quest to get at least a corner of our bathroom counter.

4. Moisturize and Seal-Like my leave in conundrum I use so many moisturizers and oils that I am still waiting for the one. At first I was using S-Curl and EVOO. Then I switched to Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship leave in and EVCO. Then when the formula changed on HELTR and I ran out of the original, I went to Neutrogena Triple Moisture Leave In and EVOO or EVCO. Then I went back to S-Curl with EVCO. However the formula for S-Curl has changed and I'm getting low on my stash of the original which means if I can't find any of the original at the BSS that I frequent, then I'm back on the hunt for another moisturizer.

So there you have it my most basic routine. Will it get me to APL? I sure hope so. Stay tuned and see.
